Reminiscent of the music of folk musicians in the Carpathians, Ligeti’s Concert Românesc (1951) is one of his earliest works. By contrast, his Hamburg Concerto from 50 years later is one of his final works, still actively struggling against the dictatorship of equal temperament. Ligeti’s surreal amusement park is accompanied with good humour by Mozart’s Horn Concerto and ‘Haffner’ Symphony.
