Tapiola Sinfonietta: A TRIP TO AMERICA season concert

Ryan Bancroft, conductor
Katharine Dain, soprano
Charles Ives: Three Places in New England
Samuel Barber: Knoxville, Summer of 1915 op. 24
Aaron Copland: Appalachian Spring
There is not just one USA. Even within New England, we find three very different places in Ives’s suite that reflects on monuments of the American Revolutionary War and Civil War, reminiscing about his evening walks with his newlywed wife. Barber’s Knoxville, Summer of 1915 is a setting of a poem by James Agee that paints a dream-like image of a world of peace on the threshold of enormous upheaval. In the Appalachian Mountains as seen by Copland, spring comes for a young couple beginning their life of hard work and happiness amidst the mountains, the environment and strong traditions.
