The exhibition “My Neighbour, the Flying Squirrel” allows a visitor to see what the mysterious life of Siberian flying squirrels is like in the city’s dark woods. Through their photos, photographers Paul Stevens, Emilia Milonoff and Tuomas Heinonen tell the story of one Siberian flying squirrel family in Espoo.

“We want to offer the city’s residents and decision-makers a personal experience of flying squirrels that could be their neighbours. We hope that our photos make them see the Siberian flying squirrel as a species they want to protect.”

Siberian flying squirrels are active at night. All the exhibition photos of the female flying squirrel and its three young were taken after sunset. The photos capture the atmosphere of the dark forest, as they were taken with only natural light.

The photographers have created a large photo book in which they tell about the behaviour of the Siberian flying squirrel and what happened when they photographed these animals.

My Neighbour, the Flying Squirrel exhibition is part of Espoo’s 50 Years as a City programme. The exhibition also provides information (in Finnish) on the protection of the Siberian flying squirrel in Espoo.
