Espoo area by area

The cultural landscape of Espoo with its built environments and nature areas is like Finland in miniature

Espoo is the second largest city in Finland and growing strongly. The city is special in that its city structure is based around five separate centres, combining urban, residential and rural living. Espoo is equally characterised by its vast nature areas: the seaside, the archipelago, the wilderness of the conservation areas and the highland waterways.

It is interesting to compare Espoo with its metropolitan area neighbours Helsinki and Vantaa, because statistically there are differences and similarities between the cities. Since the city is large on the Finnish scale in terms of population and diverse by character, it is also interesting to look at the statistics describing the city by area. Publication Espoo alueittain has been created precisely for such comparisons.

Publication Espoo alueittain (Espoo area by area) provides a comprehensive dose of information on the different areas of Espoo

The publication contains indicators describing the population, education, income, health, labour force, jobs, housing and buildings. The publication enables a better understanding of the special features of the areas in Espoo through these indicators. Some indicators are described with the help of tables, some in the form of different map presentations or other graphs. Some indicators have also been compiled to form thematic summaries.

Espoo is divided into seven major districts (suuralue), 26 statistical districts (tilastoalue) and 88 city subdistricts (pienalue). The review concerning Espoo has been implemented mainly by statistical district. In addition, short comparative texts have been written in the publication concerning the major districts, Helsinki, Vantaa and Finland as a whole.

The previous release of Espoo alueittain took place in 2020. The Espoo alueittain 2022 report is published only in electronic form.
