Consumption-based emissions
Espoo aims to become climate neutral by 2030. This target applies to regional emissions, i.e. emissions generated within city boundaries from sources such as energy use, transport and waste management.
However, Espoo’s climate efforts also take into account the wider impact of consumption. When calculating consumption-based emissions, emissions from food, goods and services are included regardless of where they are produced. This way, the climate impact of things like imported food and residents’ air travel is also taken into account. The calculation covers five areas: food, goods and services, construction, transport and energy use.
Consumption-based emissions calculation is not an alternative to traditional regional emissions calculation; instead, they complement each other. HSY (Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority) conducts an annual regional emissions calculation for the capital region. View the development of Espoo’s regional emissions here.
Espoo aims to reduce its consumption-based emissions
Espoo has been a Finnish and European pioneer in measuring consumption-based emissions. Since 2020, the city has participated in the Kulma emissions calculation, carried out by Sitowise Oy and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), which tracks municipal consumption-based emissions. The emissions calculation model has been improved with each round to achieve increasingly accurate results. The aim is to help Espoo target its actions effectively in order to also reduce consumption-based emissions.
