The importance of Finland’s only metropolitan area – and the capital region at its heart – to the country’s overall competitiveness and well-being is evident. The capital region acts as the driving force behind the country’s development in the global economy, plays a key role in resolving societal problems, and serves as the main gateway to international markets. Innovations and solutions originating in the region can be scaled up and replicated both elsewhere in Finland and internationally. In many respects, Finland’s success depends on the success of the capital region. For example, achieving ambitious national climate targets and ensuring the availability of a skilled workforce are largely determined in the capital region.
The partnership between the Government and the capital region area must be strengthened in order to bolster the cities’ economies, growth and investment capacity, as well as to enhance skills, higher education and attractiveness, and to improve the availability of labour.
