Work related to detailed planning offered challenges for landscape architect intern Pia

What are you studying?
I just graduated from the landscape architecture programme at Aalto University.
What does your internship involve? What are your tasks?
I have worked as a landscape architect intern at the City Planning Department.
My work focuses on examining the sizing of an apartment building yard in Espoo and defining guidelines from the perspective of the yard. I look for information, measure and observe places. I then draw up a report that all urban environment experts can use. My aim is to support detailed planning, which involves coordinating various elements, such as ecological and social aspects. As part of my work, I have also examined the usefulness of the green factor tool. It is intended for ensuring that plots have sufficiently large green areas.
I do a lot of on-site work, observing and photographing areas. I have also carried out assisting tasks related to planning.
What have you learned?
I have learned a lot about how planning, particularly in apartment building blocks, is viewed from the detailed planning perspective. I now have a clearer understanding of what needs to be considered in a detailed plan and how many aspects must be coordinated. Accessibility and parking regulations bring additional challenges into the equation. I feel that my studies have given me a good foundation for this internship.
I have also learned to use new programs, including the geographic information system Trimble Locus. The green factor is also a new tool for me.
What has been the best part of your internship?
The people here have been the best part of my job. I have been given responsibilities, and I feel that people trust me. It has been easy to ask for help from my co-workers.
If you could name a street in Espoo, what would you name it?
I would name a street Meriusvantie (Sea Mist Street). You can sometimes see beautiful misty archipelago landscapes on the Espoo coast.
