Ukko’s master’s thesis deals with Espoo’s lighting network

What are you studying?
I am studying at Aalto University in the Master’s Programme in Automation and Electrical Engineering.
What does your internship involve? What are your tasks?
I am writing a thesis about the life cycle of Espoo’s lighting network. My work focuses on assessing the current state and future of the lighting network, especially from the perspective of switching to LED lighting. I work here part-time.
I investigate the pace, progress, and reasons behind the shift to LEDs. To broaden my understanding of municipal outdoor lighting, I have also spoken with lighting experts from other cities, such as Vantaa. It is interesting to compare the approaches of different cities and see how Espoo differs from others.
I want my research to be understandable even to those who are not familiar with technical issues. I am also planning a seminar to present my findings to professionals at the Public Works Department.
What have you learned?
I have learned a lot about the city organisation and its internal structure, which was initially unfamiliar to me. It has become clear how substantial the cost savings and changes involved in modernising the lighting network are. This is a truly large-scale and significant process that affects the whole city.
What has been the best part of your internship?
The best part has been the flexibility of the work and the opportunity to share my own perspectives. Speaking with experts has been very educational. The city has provided extensive data and the chance to meet professionals from various fields.
Espoo’s Urban Environment Sector is an excellent place to work and offers many opportunities for students from different fields. You really get to have an impact and see the results around you.
If you could name a street in Espoo, what would you name it?
If I could name a street in Espoo, I would name it Jyrkinpolku. This name would honour my late father, Jyrki, who was active in the Espoo City Council. And because I love puns, the street would have to be quite steep (jyrkin = steepest)!
