Technology student Sonja helped improve the health of natural waters

What are you studying?
I am studying towards a Master’s degree in technology at Aalto University.
What does your internship involve? What are your tasks?
I am an intern at the Nature and Environmental Information Unit, which operates under the Environmental Protection Unit. I work with matters related to construction site waters.
My internship lasts six months and is related to the implementation of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area’s construction site water guidelines. Previously, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa and Helsinki had their own construction site water guidelines, but when it was time to update them, a decision was made to create common guidelines.
My tasks have been diverse. I have worked both in the field and in the office. In the field, I have carried out advisory visits to discuss the new guidelines and collect information on how construction site waters are currently managed in Espoo. I have been able to comment on construction site water management plans and, if necessary, propose additions or clarifications. I have mapped out construction sites located near sensitive water areas. My work has also involved cooperating with the Building Control Department.
Handling resident feedback and conducting related field investigations have been part of my duties. I have also participated in preparing building permit statements regarding construction site waters and communicating about construction site waters.
What have you learned? Has anything surprised you?
I have learned to identify which phenomena in natural waters are natural and harmless and which ones are hazardous. My knowledge of the environmental impacts of construction site waters and how to prevent them has increased. In addition, I have learned how guidelines are implemented in practice on construction sites, what challenges are involved, and which aspects are already well-managed. Construction site water management is unique in that it combines stormwater management and the qualitative aspects of water treatment. These themes are closely linked to the subjects I have studied.
The construction side of things was less familiar to me, but during my internship, I have learned a lot, especially about the comprehensive nature of the construction process.
Previously, I have worked in the private sector, and this internship has given me a glimpse into the public sector as well. It has been very interesting.
I was surprised by how much real work you get to do as an intern. However, support and help are always available.
What has been the best part of your internship?
The best part has been my colleagues and other interns. Peer support is always available, and I have made friends with many, even though we have different tasks.
I have also had the chance to really have an impact on the condition of natural waters through on-site advising and giving concrete suggestions about what can and cannot be released into the waters.
If you could name a street in Espoo, what would you name it?
During my internship, I learned that there are trout in Espoo’s waters, so Taimentie (Trout Road) would be a fun name for a street.
