International professionals play an important role in helping companies innovate, grow, and compete globally. At the City of Espoo, we work closely with employers to support talent attraction and retention while fostering internationally diverse workplaces.

One example is VitalSigns Oy(external link, opens in a new window), an Espoo-based deep-tech MedTech company that has collaborated with Espoo Talent Hub through Espoo TalentMatch recruitment events and the Espoo Talent Hub Internship Program. Through TalentMatch, the company connected with international professionals interested in opportunities in Finland, and last summer welcomed an intern through the internship programme. These collaborations help create valuable opportunities for both employers and professionals while strengthening Espoo's innovation ecosystem.

Founded within the Aalto University innovation ecosystem, VitalSigns develops AI-powered medical technology designed to support faster and more accurate clinical decision-making. As the company continues to grow, access to international expertise remains an important part of its future.

International Professionals Fuel Innovation

For VitalSigns, international recruitment is essential for finding highly specialized expertise.

"These are niche, deep-tech skills, such as embedded biomedical signal processing, AI/ML, and MedTech regulatory affairs, that are in short supply in Finland alone. As we grow from about 8 to around 13 people over the next two years, international recruitment will stay essential," says Alexis Kouros, CEO & Co-founder of VitalSigns Oy.

The company is currently looking for professionals in sales and marketing of medical devices and systems, clinical affairs, AI/ML engineering, biosignal algorithms and signal processing.

Building an International Workplace

Based in the Aalto University Start-up Center, VitalSigns operates in English and provides an international working environment where employees collaborate with founders, researchers, and innovators from around the world.

The company has already built a multinational R&D team and actively supports diversity and inclusion through initiatives such as Aalto Women in Engineering, European Women in MedTech, and the EIT Health Female Entrepreneurs Programme.

"Our R&D team is already multinational. We have concrete, board-monitored diversity targets and actively work with networks that support women in engineering, MedTech, and entrepreneurship. Progress is tracked regularly as we continue to grow," explains Kouros.

Growing Through Collaboration

Strong partnerships are important for attracting specialized expertise. To find both local and international professionals, VitalSigns utilizes LinkedIn, university networks, executive search partners, and referrals from industry contacts.

The company also sees value in continued collaboration with the City of Espoo's international working life services.

"TalentMatch recruitment events and the HeRoHub community are particularly interesting for us. Support in connecting with specialist sales, marketing, and AI/ML talent pools would also be valuable as we continue to grow," says Kouros.

The collaboration between VitalSigns and the City of Espoo demonstrates how companies, universities, and public services can work together to support international professionals and help innovative businesses grow.

Looking Ahead

As VitalSigns continues developing healthcare innovations and expanding its international team, it contributes to Espoo's goal of being an attractive city for international professionals, research, entrepreneurship, and sustainable business growth.

Through collaboration between employers and the local talent ecosystem, Espoo continues to create opportunities that benefit both companies and international professionals while strengthening the region's competitiveness and innovation capacity.
