During her internship, Riina also got to know other university interns working for the Urban Environment Sector. They often had lunch together in Otaniemi during the summer.Photo: City of Espoo

What are you studying?

I studied social geography and just received my master’s degree.

What does your internship involve? What are your tasks?

My internship in Building Site Services involves various tasks related to maintaining the land register. For example, I make sure that the register is up to date when plots are parcelled out. Development activities are also an important part of my internship. The aim is to make the system more effective. I have explored different solutions by contacting software companies and other municipalities. I have also prepared development proposals that we discuss together with the team.

What have you learned? Has anything surprised you?

I have learned a lot about the land register, which I was not familiar with before my internship. It has been very rewarding. I now have a good grasp of an entirely new subject area and related concepts. I don’t usually set high expectations beforehand, but I have been positively surprised by the relaxed atmosphere and wonderful co-workers here.

What has been the best part of your internship?

My co-workers are definitely the best part. My tasks, especially those related to the land register, have been very rewarding. My induction process was very good, and I feel that they really paid attention to me. This kind of support is very important to an intern.

If you could name a street in Espoo, what would you name it?

It could be called Aamuauringonpolku (Morning Sun Path), and it would be located somewhere near the Laajalahti nature reserve. I often cycled through that area to work in Otaniemi and admired the nature and sunny summer mornings. It was a great way to start a new day.
