In the My Espoo survey (Mun Espoo, in Finnish), residents were able to mark locations where they would like to see new and different residential buildings on the map. Respondents were asked to propose locations for three high-rise buildings of different types as well as suitable locations for detached houses, terraced houses and townhouse-type flats.
In total, the respondents marked more than 4,300 new locations for housing. According to respondents, new housing could be located especially along the coastal line and the Länsimetro line, in station areas and in Suurpelto. Several respondents also thought that additional construction could also be located further north in Viiskorpi and Kalajärvi, for example. Image 1 depicts the densest concentrations of map markings made by the respondents, but individual markings were made throughout the city.
High-rise markings were focused along the railway tracks, detached houses were proposed for different areas around the city
Suitable locations for new housing construction varied slightly based on building type. Respondents marked locations for new high-rise buildings especially around stations along the coastal line and the metro, such as in Leppävaara, Kera, Espoon keskus and Tapiola (image 2). In total, upwards of 2,200 new locations were specified for new high-rise buildings. Markings for detached houses, on the other hand, were placed liberally in various parts of southern and eastern Espoo, but there were concentrations around Kaitaa and Suurpelto in particular (image 3). A total of nearly 2,100 markings for suitable detached house locations were made.
