Report published on the potential of the hydrogen economy in Espoo
The production and use of clean hydrogen is increasing globally at a quickening pace due to the demand for carbon-neutral energy. The EU’s Fit for 55 package will bring major investments in the development of the hydrogen economy, and Finland is aiming to take a leading position in the hydrogen economy in Europe.
As the role of hydrogen in the green transition is becoming more prominent, Sasu Nuokkola, M.Sc, has prepared a report for the City of Espoo on the potential of the hydrogen economy in Espoo. The report supports joint development work by providing an introduction to hydrogen and the hydrogen economy, both generally and in the context of Espoo. The work focuses particularly on the use of renewable or green hydrogen in energy and transport systems.
Stakeholders consider hydrogen technology and research to be Espoo’s strengths
As part of the investigation work, we also sought our stakeholders’ views on Espoo’s role in promoting the hydrogen economy. For the purposes of this work, we interviewed key hydrogen stakeholders in Espoo about their views on the current and future prospects for hydrogen. We organised a lunch presentation of the work for stakeholders on 2 December 2024.
Espoo’s strengths in the hydrogen economy were considered to be, in particular, hydrogen technology and research. There is a lot of central hydrogen research and product development expertise in Espoo, and stakeholders also considered leveraging this in the coming decade as an interesting opportunity.
The hydrogen report was prepared as part of the project Innovation Challenge Engine for Cities that develops solutions to the challenges of sustainable urban development in cooperation with companies, RDI actors and universities.
The report is available in Finnish only and downloadable from the link below (not in accessible format).
