A meeting of the Equality Committee was held on 23 November 2021. The meeting discussed the following issues.

Equality Committee’s induction to equality work in Espoo

The Equality Committee’s induction started with speeches by minority groups. At the meeting, representatives from minority groups talked about the daily lives of the Roma community, Sámi people and members of sexual and gender minorities in Espoo and why equality legislation should be actively implemented. This discussion served as an introduction to the presentation of legislation and discussion on equality in Espoo and in Finnish society.

During the meeting, it was stated that the speeches by the minority representatives concretely brought forward the inequality and the challenges that many of the members of the Equality Committee never face themselves because of their background. The participants requested similar speeches also in the future to support of their work on equality and non-discrimination.

The induction material was roughly presented and sent to the ordinary members of the Equality Committee and their deputies. The Committee will return to the induction in early 2022 in connection with the action plan.
