Lead partner of a new URBACT network
This article series presents cases of innovations built here in Espoo that strive for a better tomorrow for all.
Espoo aims to enhance strategic governance and sustainability in European cities, recognizing the importance of cities in achieving the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In May 2023, Espoo became the first Finnish city to be selected as a lead partner for an EU funded cooperation programme Urbact network. The Cities for Sustainability Governance (CSG) network focuses on developing strategic governance in European cities based on the SDGs.
As the lead partner of the CSG network, Espoo contributes its strategic expertise to joint development efforts, promoting comprehensive sustainability practices. This collaboration involves learning from partner cities and sharing best practices to foster sustainable development. Additionally, Espoo leads other projects like SPARCS, enhancing cooperation and synergies between cities to drive sustainability initiatives.
CSG aims to bridge the gap between sustainability theory and practice. Participating cities commit to a strategic path forward through storytelling. Espoo's leadership underscores the critical role of European cities in achieving the UN’s SDGs. By enhancing strategic governance and fostering collaboration, Espoo and its partner cities are better equipped to meet sustainability goals and drive socio-economic development across Europe. Several cities in Europe and beyond have adopted Espoo’s holistic approach to using SDGs as a framework, metrics, and common language to engage the entire community in working towards sustainable development.
