The joy of reading for everyone – libraries strengthen readingskills and inspire people to engage with stories
Library reading circles offer an opportunity to discuss books in a relaxed atmosphere. Most reading circles are in Finnish and focus on fiction, but there are also groups that focus on specific topics and different languages, such as non-fiction or easy-to-read books.
Reading circles are open to everyone. No registration is required to participate, and you don't have to attend every meeting – you can join in whenever you like. The members read a book agreed upon by the group and discuss it under the guidance of a facilitator. You can also suggest your own book for the book club. You are welcome to join even if you haven't finished reading the book – or even if you didn't like it. You don't need to be a literature expert; the most important thing is your interest in discussion and stories.
Different reading circles for different needs
- The traditional book club invites you to discuss a single book.
- Novellikoukku offers a peaceful moment where readers read short stories or chapters from books aloud. At the same time, you can do crafts, draw, or just enjoy listening.
- The Silent Book Club is for those who just want to read their own book in peace. At the beginning, you can exchange a few words about books or reading, but the main focus is on quiet togetherness.
You can find all reading circles by searching for "reading circles” in the Helmet.fi event search(external link, opens in a new window).
You can also start your own reading circle.
Reading circles are organized by library staff, organizations, and volunteers. Would you like to start your own reading circle? How about a Gilmore Girls reading circle, a circle focusing on detective stories, or a poetry circle? The library offers support and facilities to help you realize your ideas.
Story time and reading fun for the little ones
The libraries' open story times support children's early reading habits. Story times are organized in all regional libraries – often in several languages. In Espoo, you can hear stories in Finnish, Swedish, English, Spanish, Estonian, and Arabic, for example. In addition, regional libraries have Lukulumo tablets that can be used to listen to stories in over 70 languages.
Reading diploma and Helmet reading challenge
The Helmet reading diploma(external link, opens in a new window) for schoolchildren and the Helmet reading challenge(external link, opens in a new window) for all enthusiastic readers encourage them to explore the diverse world of literature. Library staff are happy to help you choose suitable books. Many libraries also have display shelves with books suitable for the diploma or challenge – and you can suggest topics for new displays.

One of the key objectives of Espoo City Library’s strategy for 2024–2030 is to promote all forms of literacy. This includes the goal of developing residents' diverse reading skills and encouraging them to read. The library supports this goal in many ways, including by organizing various reading circles and events.
The joy of reading – see you at the library!
