Grandpa as a reading companion at school

Volunteer grandmas and grandpas work as reading companions at schools to promote pupils’ reading skills. They are not part of the teaching staff or the official learning support system, but they are nevertheless very important support persons for many pupils.
Ismo Ylinen is a regular guest at Aarnivalkean koulu. He visits the school as a reading companion and helps children develop their reading skills.
“Together, we read a book chosen by the pupil. I explain difficult words and help with understanding the text. We can also look for more good books to read together,” Ylinen tells us.
Ylinen’s role has expanded beyond being a reading companion: he also helps pupils in technical crafts classes.
“I’m an additional adult in the classroom, so no one has to wait too long for help. I’ve been doing all kinds of crafts all my life, so helping out in technical crafts classes comes naturally to me.”
Ylinen became a ‘school grandpa’ thanks to the encouragement of his wife, who is a teacher. This volunteer work brings joy to both him and the pupils. For Ylinen, it also adds routine and meaning to life.
“I warmly recommend this activity to anyone who enjoys working with children and young people. You can do as much as you like, and it really makes you feel useful.”
