Far-reaching views from the Bergö birdwatching tower

The Bergö birdwatching tower in Suvisaaristo is a destination worth visiting and experiencing. It offers magnificent views and an excellent vantage point for birdwatching. 

From the top of the tall and impressive birdwatching tower, situated in the Bergö-Ramsö nature reserve, there are wide open views in all directions.  
Many visitors climb the tower to admire the views; while for others, it offers an excellent location for observing the starry sky. Above all, the tower is visited by birdwatchers.  

“There, you can observe birds all year round, but the range of species is most diverse during the migration season in spring and autumn. Then, you can see, for example, doves, geese, small birds, waterfowl and predatory birds, such as sparrowhawks, buzzards and white-tailed eagles,” says Antti Mikala, Environmental Operative at the City of Espoo.  

Remember to bring binoculars or a telescope to see the birds flying in the distance.  

“If you are new to birdwatching, it is also a good idea to bring a field guide with you,” Mikala says.  

The 2.5-kilometre Bergö nature trail circles the area. It runs through varied terrain, from rocky pine forest to spruce forest and alder groves. The trail is uneven in places due to tree roots.   

One of the special features of the nature trail is the so-called “shell land”, a pale purple area consisting of the broken shells of blue mussels, dating back to the time when the area was open water.   

Next to the tower, there is a picnic area with a table and benches. If you get lucky while enjoying your snack, you might spot a parrot crossbill flying past on its way to its nest.
