The Equality Committee's meeting on 1 December 2021

The meeting discussed the following issues.

The Equality Committee discussed anti-racist activities and commitment.

The discussion recalled anti-racist activities and the characteristics and content of a good commitment. The committee meeting was spent entirely on discussing the anti-racist commitment, first in small groups and then in joint discussion collecting different views. At the meeting, an intensive team was set up, consisting of Ira Tanskanen-Hietanen, Iiris Mikkilä, Paula Åkerlund, Tereza Dickson, Oskari Hyttinen and Kaarina Salonen (secretary). The intensive team was tasked with creating an antiracist commitment template based on the December discussion and sending a draft version to the Committee members for comments before Christmas.

The plan is to forward the anti-racist commitment to the Council groups for comments in January 2022 and subsequently to be discussed by the City Council within the agreed-upon schedule. The schedule will be specified later at the meeting of the Council Advisory Committee.

Characteristics of a good commitment include active form (I want to act, participate, find out, learn..), use of short, active verbs with clear starting points. The commitment must be ambitious, and such that it can be put into practice.
