Erika and Inka, who study at the Espoonlahden lukio general upper secondary school – also known as Jylla – have found a working balance between competitive sports and their studies. Both have planned their studies around their sport and take advantage of the school’s flexibility to progress at their own pace.

Erika is in her second year of upper secondary school and is completing her studies in three and a half years. She plays floorball for Northern Stars’ U18 team at the national championship level, training about four times a week. A flexible study plan leaves time for both training and recovery.

Inka has also opted for an extended study path, completing her studies over four years. She is a cheerleader for the Funky Team Blackbackz. Each week, Inka’s schedule includes four team practices and four individual training sessions. In the spring, the team will head to the World Championships, among other events.

Both chose Jylla because of the opportunities it offers. “I had heard a lot of good things about how you can combine sport and studies here. The location also works well for me,” Inka says.  Erika was drawn by a convenient commute and the wide selection of languages. “I visited Jylla and really liked it. Getting here is easy, and there are great opportunities to study languages,” she says.  At upper secondary school, she has had the chance to start learning Spanish and German.

At Jylla, Erika and Inka started in a homeroom group with many other students engaged in competitive sports. Sharing a similar daily routine creates mutual understanding when balancing studies with training, and strengthens team spirit.

Erika’s studies focus on Spanish and German, while Inka is particularly interested in the natural sciences and languages. Jylla’s wide course selection makes it possible to pursue these different interests.

Both students have enjoyed their time at Jylla. According to Erika, it’s especially the friends, great team spirit, and encouraging teachers that make the school such a pleasant place to study. Inka, for her part, appreciates the school’s flexibility and sports-friendly atmosphere.

At Jylla, Erika and Inka have found a school where competitive sports and academics support each other. Flexible study paths, a wide range of courses and an athlete-friendly atmosphere help them work towards their goals, in both upper secondary school and sports.
