Accessibility is a human right and should be a natural part of all city operations. Sirkku Kiviniitty started working as an accessibility specialist for the City of Espoo in the spring.  “Accessibility is essential for some and good for everyone. That is why improving accessibility is an inspiring job”, Kiviniitty says.

Kiviniitty answered some questions about her job for the readers of Espoo Magazine.

What does an accessibility specialist do?

In Espoo, I promote accessibility related to sight, hearing, mobility, understanding and communication, both in the environment and in transport and services.

In the Urban Environment Sector, I guide and coordinate the planning and implementation of accessibility, train staff and develop communication and guidance. Espoo residents can also contact me directly.

What is the City of Espoo doing to promote accessibility?

Espoo requires its services to be suitable for all its residents. Solutions for public transport, libraries and swimming pools, among other things, are presented to the ‘Rakennetaan kaikille’ (Building for All) working group of the Disability Council during the planning phase. Espoo provides instructions for making events accessible for everyone, including wheelchair users.¨

Every year, the city organises the Action for Accessibility competition, to which residents can submit their nominees.

Checklists for equality and accessibility in the workplace have been drawn up for the city’s recruitment operations.

What accessibility issues are relevant now?

The significance of both sensory environment diversity and advance preparation has grown. Another topical issue is the accessibility of school properties also in terms of evening hobby activities.
