Visit sports services

Espoo maintains hundreds of high-quality sports facilities, both indoors and outdoors, and offers guided activities for people of all ages. We work closely with local sports clubs and organise various types of exercise and top-level sports events. Our aim is to offer everyone equal opportunities to lead an active lifestyle regardless of their background or age.

Espoo is a pioneer in digital sports

New technologies have an impact on sports and exercise, and digital services enable the emergence of new hobbies and phenomena. Cities have to keep evolving to be able to serve local residents, businesses and associations in the best possible way.

Espoo is currently running a project related to the digitalisation of sports and exercise. Its aim is to improve residents’ opportunities to engage in recreational activities, increase Espoo’s expertise in digital sports and enable experimentation with digital phenomena.

As a pioneer in the digital sports and exercise culture, we create new ways for people of all ages to be physically active. Digital solutions and gamification encourage young people, in particular, to be physically active without them even considering it exercise. In Espoo, you can learn about all the possibilities offered by digital exercise.

The project is coordinated by the City of Espoo’s Sports and Exercise Unit and involves extensive cooperation within the Sector for Economic Development, Sports and Culture and with the Growth and Learning Sector. Contact the project staff and build networks with them online or visit us here in Espoo.

Sustainable conditions for physical activity

Would you like to know how life-cycle cost effectiveness and renewable energy solutions can be taken into account in the construction of sports facilities?

Espoo’s Sports and Exercise Services is committed to Espoo’s goal of being carbon-neutral by 2030. The Matinkylä indoor swimming pool uses renewable energy sources, the pool water is mainly heated by geothermal energy, and some of the power needed by the building is produced by solar panels installed on the roof. There is also a green roof that helps reduce energy costs and acts as a stormwater detention solution. In the future, swimming pool visitors can see the amount of electricity produced through a display installed in the lobby.

You are warmly welcome to visit our swimming pool in Matinkylä or any of the other sports facilities in Espoo!

Outdoor recreation in a growing city

In Espoo, local nature is accessible to all. How can the needs of a growing city and biodiversity be reconciled? Come and explore Espoo’s archipelago, the unique Waterfront Walkway running along the seaside, the dense network of pedestrian and bicycle routes, the mountain biking trails in Central Park, or the Nuuksio national park and the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia.

Physical activity for children and young people in cooperation with clubs

We organise a wide range of activities for children and young people together with Espoo-based sports clubs. Our aim is to ensure that as many of them as possible are able to join club activities through city-supported hobbies.

Launched in the autumn of 2023, the Play and Move activities (‘Leiki ja liiku’ in Finnish) allow all 5–6-year-olds from the day care centres of the Leppävaara area to participate in classes run by a local gymnastics club, Espoon Telinetaiturit, in the brand-new multisport facility Kameleonten.

The Play and Move activities are a joint project of the city’s Sports and Exercise Unit, the Finnish and Swedish early childhood education units and Espoon Telinetaiturit. The activities help children develop their motor skills in many ways.

We want to offer the entire age group equal opportunities to find the joy of physical activity and gain skills that also support other aspects of learning.

Espoo is a vibrant, creative and internationally interesting sports event city. Every year, sports clubs organise about 5,000 competitions, tournaments, shows, camps and other events in Espoo.

In 2022, Espoo hosted 12 major sports events supported by the city, including the Davis Cup tennis tournament, games of the men’s national basketball team (aka Susijengi), the Elisa Masters Espoo esports event, the World Ringette Championships and the international figure skating competition Finlandia Trophy Espoo.

Convenient school accommodation, school gymnasiums, sports halls and sports parks, combined with short distances and good public transport services, also create a unique setting for major junior events. We are happy to tell you more about our event collaboration and sports events.

Espoo offers a wide range of free exercise for seniors

The City of Espoo offers all over 67-year-olds a variety of free exercise services through the +68 Sports Wristband. The selection includes exercise classes, gym training and water aerobics. The +68 Sports Wristband allows its holder to bring an over 18-year-old friend with them to Espoo’s indoor and outdoor swimming pools and gyms as well as on archipelago boat trips free of charge.
