Instruction preparing for basic education

Pupils who do not speak Finnish begin school in a preparatory education group. There are preparatory education groups in several schools. If the pupil speaks some Finnish and needs support in strengthening their Finnish skills, they can receive preparatory education in one's own class at the local school. The language of instruction in preparatory education is Finnish. In addition to Finnish, the pupils study other basic education subjects according to the pupils' own curriculum. Preparatory education lasts for one school year. After preparatory education, the pupil begins comprehensive school in which he/she receives enhanced support for studies if necessary. Pupils are guided to preparatory education through the Multicultural Education Services.
