General upper secondary education
In general upper secondary school, students study a variety subjects such as mother tongue, foreign languages, mathematics, nature sciences, humanities, social sciences, religion or ethics, health and sports education as well as arts and physucal education subjects. Genreal upper secondary education studies are divided into compulsory, supplementary and applied courses. Students choose their own courses and progress in their studies according to their personal study plan. Certain subjects can be weighted in general upper secondary school, in which case there are more supplementary and applied courses available in those subjects. A general upper secondary school may also have a line/programme that is separately applied for in the joint application. In the line, the instruction of a particular subject is more extensive and in-depth, and there are more courses available in that subject.
