Coronavirus infections at several nursing homes in Espoo

13.1.2022 13.10

Several nursing homes in Espoo have reported coronavirus infections among residents and staff members. We strongly recommend avoiding visits to nursing homes. You can keep in touch with your loved ones by telephone.

At the Vuoksela nursing home, 14 residents and 5 staff members have been diagnosed with the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

Last week, we published a news article about coronavirus infections at the Hopeakuu nursing home. At the Hopeakuu nursing home, a total of 16 residents and fewer than 5 staff members have been diagnosed with the coronavirus during last week and this week.

In addition, thirteen other nursing homes have reported individual cases of coronavirus among residents or staff.

The infected residents have been isolated from other residents, and the infected staff members have been placed in isolation.

At housing units whose residents are at risk of severe coronavirus disease, such as nursing homes, exposed individuals may still be placed in quarantine, even though outside health care and social welfare units most exposed people are no longer placed in official quarantine. Those exposed at nursing homes have been placed in quarantine. We have contacted the families of infected residents who have been placed in isolation and of exposed residents who have been placed in quarantine.

Keep in touch by telephone

We strongly recommend avoiding visits to nursing homes that have reported coronavirus infections. We advise you to wait until all residents have completed their 10-day quarantine.

At the moment, the coronavirus is spreading fast and is highly transmissible. We strongly recommend avoiding visits to nursing homes and ask family members and friends to carefully consider if their visit is necessary. We encourage people to keep in touch with their loved ones by telephone. If you need to visit a nursing home, please contact the staff and agree on your visit in advance. This will enable us to check that the visit can take place.

Please remember that visits with residents who are in isolation or quarantine are not allowed.  Visits with residents in hospice care are allowed.

We will try to keep everyday life for other nursing home residents as normal as possible. Due to coronavirus-related precautionary measures and staff shortages, there may be temporary changes in the daily routines at nursing homes and we may not be able to carry out all planned recreational activities.

City increases communication with nursing homes

Espoo offers intensified sheltered housing for approximately 1,400 clients who can no longer live at home. There are nearly 40 private and city-run nursing homes in Espoo. In the coming weeks, the City of Espoo's unit responsible for long-term care will increase communication with nursing homes. This will keep us up to date on the situation in nursing homes, and we can also provide help quickly if the situation in a nursing home so requires.
