The advance voting period of the county elections is 12–18 January 2022 in Finland and 12–15 January 2022 abroad. The actual election day is Sunday 23 January 2022. You can vote in advance at any advance polling station.

The purpose of the county elections is to elect the decision-makers of the upcoming wellbeing services counties. By voting in the county elections, you can influence how health, social and rescue services will be organised in your county.

In the county elections, the residents of Espoo, Hanko, Inkoo, Kauninen, Karkkila, Kirkkonummi, Lohja, Raasepori, Siuntio and Vihti will elect the 79 councillors of the county council of the wellbeing services county of West Uusimaa(external link). The term of the county council will be 1 March 2022–31 May 2025.

As of 1 January 2023, the wellbeing services counties will be responsible for organising the following:

  • primary health care
  • specialised health care
  • social services
  • children’s, youth and family services
  • services for working-age people
  • services for older persons
  • mental health and substance abuse services
  • services for people with disabilities
  • pupil and student health care
  • promotion of wellbeing and health
  • rescue services

You can vote in advance in your home if your ability to move and function is limited to the degree that it would be unreasonably difficult for you to go to an advance polling station or a polling station on election day. If you wish to vote at home, you must notify the central municipal election board of your municipality of this in writing or by telephone by 16:00 on Tuesday 11 January 2022. The telephone number and address of the central municipal election board can be found in the notice of right to vote.

In Finland, special advance polling stations will also be set up at hospitals, old people’s homes, nursing homes, sheltered housing units and prisons. These polling stations may only be used by people who receive treatment or are incarcerated at the above-mentioned institutions. Additionally, advance polling stations will be set up at the garrisons of the Finnish Defence Forces’ detachments and the units of the Finnish Border Guard that train conscripts.

Follow safety instructions at polling stations

The county elections will be held with the arrangements required by the epidemiological situation. By the time of the county elections, all willing eligible voters will have had the time to receive at least two COVID-19 vaccine doses. According to the assessment of the Ministry of Justice and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, voting is a low-risk activity. The election officials will be following the instructions that they have been given to ensure that voting at the polling stations is safe.

Please follow these instructions at the polling station:

  • Keep sufficient physical distance from others.
  • Keep your hands clean. Use hand sanitiser.
  • If possible, wear a face mask or a visor at the polling station.
  • If you want, you can bring your own pen to the polling station.
  • If you have respiratory symptoms, wait until you recover before voting in advance.
