Throw together the music of the indigenous people of South America, of the continent’s European colonisers and of imported African slaves, and you get a richness of musical styles without equal. The choro music of Brazil is a fine example of this melting pot, merging the fervour of fado, elegant harmonies, sentimental melodies and western African rhythms in a mix that continues to fascinate listeners to this day. The minor-key dominance of choro speaks to something in the Finnish psyche, but its swinging rhythms stop it from sinking into the mire of autumn moodiness.
