Franz Schubert: ‘Great’ Symphony in C major D 944
Born in Scotland but now living in New York, Anna Clyne wrote her cello concerto DANCE in 2019, inspired by five lines by 13th-century Persian poet and mystic Rumi, beginning: “Dance – when you are broken – if you have torn your restraints – amidst a struggle – in your blood – when you are fully free.” Schumann heard Schubert’s ‘Great’ Symphony in C major in 1938 and declared: “This symphony takes us to worlds that no one has visited before.” Jukka-Pekka Saraste conducts the Tapiola Sinfonietta for the first time.
