Afternoon activities and care for pupils
Espoo organises afternoon activities for pupils in grades 1-2 and for pupils requiring special support after the school day. Afternoon group activities in schools are organised by schools, organisations and private service providers. Afternoon activities are recreational activities that support the educational work of home and school. In addition to guided activities, the children can focus on their own playing. The afternoons are spent both indoors and outdoors. The children participating in the afternoon activities are insured and covered by the personal accident insurance of the city. Afternoon activities of basic education are subject to a fee. Based on the income of the family, it is possible to apply for a payment relief or remission for the service. Applying for afternoon activities of schools is done for one school year at a time. Activities are not organised during school holidays or school Saturdays. Afternoon activities of basic education are organised in 62 locations.

For more information please contact info@espoo.fi or call tel. 09-816 21.
Admission principles
Admission of afternoon activities is decided on the primacy order decided by the Growth and Learning Committee on November 3th 2021 § 106:
a) pupils in the first grade who have a special needs education decision
b) other pupils in the first grade
c) pupils in the second grade who have a special needs education decision
d) pupils in the third grade or older than that who have a special needs education decision
e) other pupils in the second grade
If there comes a situation in the admission process that all pupils belonging to the same group (groups a-e) cannot be admitted, the admittance is carried out by drawing lots.
Operating times
Afternoon activities are organized on school days, excluding Saturday school days.
- Part-time afternoon activities until 3pm
- Full-time afternoon activities until 5pm
A child can leave afternoon activities earlier, if this has been discussed and agreed with the child's guardian(s) and afternoon activities' staff.
A place in afternoon activities is granted either part-time or full time depending on, which activity hours the child's guardian has marked on the afternoon activities application.
It is possible to change activity hours in afternoon activities during the semester. The change should be submitted minimum one calendar month prior to the change. The change in activity hours can be made either in Wilma under the "Hakemukset ja päätökset" tab by filling in the form "Iltapäivätoimintapaikan peruuttaminen, irtisanominen ja toiminta-ajan muuttaminen" (eng. Cancelling and terminating an afternoon activities place or changing activity hours) or by email to iltapaivatoiminta@espoo.fi . The change in activity hours will come to effect after a whole calendar month has passed and the client fee is collected accordingly.
Example:
The guardian changes his child's activity hours in afternoon activities from full time to part-time in February. The change in activity hours will come to effect after a whole calendar month has passed, so in this example case on the 1st of April. A full fee is charged for February and March.
Client fees
The client fees of afternoon activities issued by the City Board are:
- Part-time activities until 3 pm - 90 euros per month.
- Full time activities until 5 pm - 150 euros per month.
The client fee is the same for every month from August until May. The client fee is not collected in June. Invoices for afternoon activities are sent afterwards, when the whole afternoon activities month has passed.
Absences
If a child cannot participate in afternoon activities for over 10 days during a calendar month, only half of the monthly fee will be collected.
If an illness-related absence lasts the entire calendar month, the monthly fee will not be collected.
If a child does not participate in afternoon activities for some other reason than illness during the entire calendar month, half of the monthly fee will be collected.
If a child does not participate in afternoon activities for some other reason than illness and is absent part of the month, the whole monthly fee will be collected.
The child's guardian can notify his/her child's absences that effect the client fee by email to iltapaivatoiminta@espoo.fi.
An afternoon activities place can be cancelled, if the child does not need the place. In this case the cancellation of the afternoon activities place has to be done in two weeks time after the decision on the afternoon activities place has been made. If the cancellation is made quickly in two weeks time, no client fee will be collected.
After the two week cancellation period it is possible to terminate the afternoon activities place. In this case the termination of the afternoon activities place will come to effect after a whole calendar month has passed. During the termination period normal client fees are collected.
The cancellation or termination of afternoon activities places are made in Wilma. The instructions to the cancellation or termination of an afternoon activities place can be seen by opening the decision of the afternoon activities place. The cancellation or termination of afternoon activities places can also be done by email to iltapaivatoiminta@espoo.fi.
Example:
Guardian terminates the afternoon activities place in February. The termination of the afternoon activities place will come to effect after a whole calendar month has passed, so in our example case on the 1st of April.
Afternoon activities' client fees can be left uncollected or be reduced. The uncollection of fees means that afternoon activities are free of charge for the family and the reduced fee means that only half of the client fee is charged.
The decision is based on family size and family gross income. Applying for the non-collection or reduction of afternoon activities fees is done by filling in the application form. The application for the non-collection or reduction of afternoon activities fees can be submitted after the child has been admitted to afternoon activities. The application and all the necessary income attachments are sent to:
