Appointment booking and cancellation

If you need to, you can check your appointment in our online service. Log in using your online banking codes, certificate card or mobile ID.
Cancellations and rescheduled appointments
You can reschedule and cancel appointments online at any time, with the exception of urgent care and orthodontic treatment. Customer service is available during our opening hours. When our customer service is closed, you can cancel an appointment by leaving a message to our voice mail, tel. 09 816 30300.
You can cancel an appointment around the clock by sending a text message to the number 045 739 65839. Your text message should include the patient’s name, date of birth and the date and time of the appointment you want to cancel.
In case you cancel your appointment, please make a new appointment if necessary.
Please note that if you need to cancel an appointment, you must do so by 14 o’clock on the day before your appointment. If you miss an appointment or cancel it at the last minute, we will charge you a fee according to our price list.
The appointment booking number has a call-back system. Please give the answering machine your telephone number, and we will call you back on the same day (exceptions to this are possible if we have a long backlog).
Some 4,500 dental care appointments become available every week, and most of them can be booked online. The appointment booking situation changes all the time, and we get cancellations every day because of the pandemic (people can only come to the dental clinic if they have no symptoms). If the online booking system shows no available appointments for the near future, make sure to browse the calendar to find the next available appointment.
We will send you a text message to remind you of your appointment two days in advance (with the exception of urgent care) if you have given your consent for it. You can give your consent when you book an appointment or through our online service. Please note that if you do not receive the reminder for some reason, this does not exempt you from paying the appointment fee. If you are booking an appointment for someone close to you who has turned 14, they need to authorise you to use e-services on their behalf.
Please fill in a medical history form
To give you the best treatment, it is important for us to know about matters related to your health or the medicines you are taking. You may fill in the medical history form online. Printed forms are also available at the clinics.
It is important that you fill in the medical history form before your first appointment if your health status has changed or if more than a year has passed since you last filled it in. You may fill in the form online at any time. We will also send you a text message to remind you to fill in the medical history form five days before your appointment if you have given us permission to send you text message reminders.
Checking your personal data
My Kanta pages – records about your care My Kanta is an online service for citizens. You can use it to browse your own health records and your medication recorded by health care services. The service is accessed through the Kanta Services website or directly at omakanta.fi The Oral Health Services of the City of Espoo joined My Kanta on 18 May 2019. Information about any appointments you have had since then and your records are available in My Kanta.
Other personal data registers. Customer and patient data is recorded in different personal data registers by the City of Espoo Social and Health Services to the extent that is necessary in each case. As a customer or patient, you have the right to access your personal data stored in different registers and ask for stored materials related to your treatment (e.g. x-ray images). To do this, please send us a personally signed request for access. Further information and forms are available in Finnish and Swedish According to the General Data Protection Regulation, you are in principle entitled to access your information free of charge once a year. If your requests to access your information are clearly unfounded or excessive, in particular because of their repetitive character, we may charge a fee or refuse to fulfil your request.

Clients who need urgent care are usually treated within the same day either by the dental clinics in Espoo or the centralised emergency services of the capital region.
Seek emergency care if you have the following symptoms:
- Swelling that involves fever
- Difficulties opening and closing your mouth
- Difficulties in breathing and swallowing
- Trauma or injury in the mouth or jaw area
- Pain/ache that does not lessen with painkillers
- Bleeding for example following a tooth extraction, if the bleeding does not stop in 45–60 minutes even if you bite on a gauze pad
- All problems related to permanent and removable dental appliances
- A particularly severe fracture in a tooth or a filling
In less urgent situations (e.g. a chipped tooth that does not bother you, mild pain, pain caused by hot or cold, or problems with dentures), please call the City of Espoo dental care appointment booking, tel. 09 816 30300. In these cases, we will try to schedule an appointment for you within three weeks.

Dental care fees
Dental care client fees are based on the national decree on client fees. After your appointment, we will send you an invoice to the address included in your customer information. Municipal dental care is free for persons younger than 18, with some exceptions. A fee will be charged for uncancelled, missed appointments, and for orthodontic appliances that are lost or broken after being handled negligently or incorrectly.
The fee for a dental hygienist’s appointment is EUR 10.30 and for a dentist’s appointment EUR 13.10. The fee for a specialised dental care appointment is EUR 19.20. In addition, fees are charged for various dental procedures. The fee depends on the procedure.

Malocclusion and orthodontics
A dental examination includes an examination of your bite. If necessary, you will be referred to an orthodontist who will assess the difficulty of your malocclusion (improper bite), the need for orthodontics and, particularly in the case of children, the time when treatment should begin.
Orthodontic treatment is available in Espoo in line with national guidelines.
The difficulty of malocclusions (improper bite) is rated on a scale from 1 to 10. The City of Espoo will treat malocclusions in categories 8 to 10. Patients with milder malocclusions may seek orthodontic treatment from a private dental care provider at their own cost.
Orthodontic treatment requires good oral health. The teeth must not have any cavities and the gums must not be inflamed. The patient must commit to cleaning their teeth very well throughout the treatment.
Orthodontic appliances must be used as instructed. The patient must bring the appliances with them to every appointment. When orthodontic treatment begins, the patient may feel some pain in their mouth for a few days.
The treatment takes an average of 1–3 years. The retention phase that follows usually takes two years.
Orthodontic treatment is free of charge until the patient turns 18. Persons over 15 years of age will be charged a fee for uncancelled, missed appointments. The patient is responsible for the costs of any orthodontic appliances that are lost or broken due to negligent handling. If the patient does not use the orthodontic appliances as instructed and needs a new appliance because of this, the patient will have to cover dental laboratory costs.

Services for patients of all ages
Families expecting their first child
The City of Espoo provides a free-of-charge health counselling appointment for families expecting their first child. Pregnancy is an excellent time to learn about the child’s oral health and care because children easily adopt their parents’ habits when it comes to health, nutrition and oral care. The goal is that the parents have a healthy mouth and teeth before the child is born. The appointment does not include a dental examination. Instead, the idea is to help the new parents establish good health habits, assess any need for treatment they may have, and refer them further to other services. Children and young people
Periodic dental examinations are performed by age group. Invitation letters are sent by post. All children and young people get an individual care plan. The plan covers the dates of their upcoming appointments with dental hygienists and dentists, home care instructions, preventive and remedial care, follow-up of the development of the child’s occlusion (bite) and possible X-ray imagings.
We send all families with children aged 1, 3 and 5 a letter to inform of the opportunity to book an oral health examination appointment for the child. You can book an appointment online or by phone. You will receive the letter slightly before or during the child’s month of birth.
Families with children attending grades 1, 3, 5 and 8 will receive a letter to inform of the opportunity to book an oral health examination appointment for the child. You can book an appointment online or by phone. The letter will arrive half a year after the child’s/adolescent’s birth month.
We also send a letter to every 17-year-old Espoo resident to request them to book an appointment for an oral health examination.
Students in Espoo-based educational institutions may have their oral health examined at the dental clinics of the City of Espoo, regardless of their domicile. Dental care is free of charge for persons under the age of 18.
After an oral health examination, we draw up an individual care plan for every patient. The patient’s need for treatment, the treatment schedule and the next appointment are specified in the care plan.
