A stream cleaning effort refers to the restoration of streams and riverbeds to improve their ecological condition, promote the natural reproduction of migrant fish and crabs, and improve the landscape.

Dates

Stream cleaning efforts are usually organised in the autumn. However, the time may vary depending on the stream and its fish stock.

Planning and assistance

It is essential to plan each restoration project in advance, compiling the basic information necessary. The basic information includes factors affecting the condition of the stream, conservation values, water quality information as well as landowner and water area owner information. The parties that you may contact for advice regarding stream cleaning and planning in Uusimaa include the Virho association and the Espoo-Mankki fishing area. You should contact them as early as possible.

Other parties that you can contact for planning assistance are the Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, water conservation associations and water consulting agencies. Stream cleaning efforts may be organised at low cost. Costs are incurred from, among other things, planning actions, purchasing materials and performing machine work.

Various methods of stream cleaning

For example, the stream may be diversified by adding rocks and wood in the riverbed and on its banks as well as gravel for spawning. Vegetation is planted in the stream to prevent erosion and provide shade. Dams clogging up the stream are removed, and the stream is cleaned up.

Permissions required for the restoration effort

Restoration always requires the permission of the water area owner and landowners. The need for other permits is assessed on a case-specific basis by the Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment and, if necessary, the Regional State Administrative Agency. The City of Espoo and the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment should be contacted in the early stages of the project. The restoration of streams is primarily governed by the Water Act.

You can apply for funding for stream cleaning

Stream cleaning projects are funded to some extent by appropriations from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of the Environment as well as fishing industry promotion funds. These can be applied for at the Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. The City of Espoo has also supported stream cleaning efforts. The City of Espoo Environment Department should be contacted for funding opportunities during the planning stage.
