The grant is intended for cultural actors, communities, work groups and private persons for the purpose of art hobby activities that take into account economic and geographic accessibility, the day-to-day life of families as well as different backgrounds and diverse learning styles.

The hobby activities must focus on art content, and the instructor must be an expert of the art form. It is also preferable for the target group to be able to take part in planning and developing the hobby activities. Grants are primarily awarded to projects aimed at larger areas that have fewer existing offerings of art hobby activities.

The aim of the new grant is to support meaningful activities focused on art and culture in different areas in Espoo. The interpretation of ‘hobby activities’ can be fairly free, such as holiday activities for schoolchildren, pop-ups for families or art courses for adults. Collaborative applications from different actors are also welcome.

The applications opened on 4 February 2019.

Art hobbies also offer meaningful activities for working-age people

In early 2019, textile artist Greta Muuri directed a community art project at the Suomenoja Work and Learning Centre. Clients of rehabilitative work activities designed and made a wall rug together in the handicraft workshop. Muuri and work coaches from the work and learning centre helped guide the work. The completed wall rug was donated to Soukka Service Centre.

The completion of the joint project was celebrated with a visit to Exhibition Centre WeeGee and Espoo Museum of Modern Art, EMMA. The participants also received information about Espoo cultural services, while the City gained valuable feedback from the participants on how to develop the activities in the future.
