Abortion

If you know or think you have recently become pregnant and want to terminate the pregnancy, make an appointment with a doctor at the health centre as soon as possible. Pregnancy should be terminated within twelve weeks of pregnancy. Pregnancy is counted from the date when your last menstrual period began. The exact time is, however, always determined with an ultrasound scan at the hospital.

The most common causes for abortion are social and health reasons. Pregnancy may also be terminated after the twelfth week of pregnancy for compelling reasons, but in that case you need a special permit.

The abortion is performed in the hospital’s outpatient clinic, but you must first get a referral to the hospital by a health centre doctor. You will not spend the night in the hospital. You get between one and three days of sick leave.

After the abortion, you will be called to a checkup. Usually it comprises a blood test and a medical examination.
