European Cities and Regions of the Future -study ranks biennially the most promising investment locations in Europe. This year Uusimaa region, consisting of the southern cities of Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa impressed in the Economic Potential category. In addition, the Finnish capital region performed well in their own categories.

“Smooth everyday life is important in Espoo. A top-three placing in Human Capital and Lifestyle category shows that active involvement of residents in the development of our services and our comprehensive co-operation with partners ensure effective services. The best resources in Espoo are our residents, communities and companies”, Jukka Mäkelä, Mayor of the City of Espoo states.

Thanks to Aalto University and VTT, Espoo is home to a cluster of science, art and business making good use of high technology, innovations and world-class expertise. Espoo also has highly educated residents – 52 % of people over 25 years old hold a university degree.

“Almost 50 % of Helsinki Stock Exchange turnover comes from the companies based in Espoo. Finland’s thriving startup boom and the startup event Slush largely originated from Aalto University that, as a local organisation, is involved in building Europe’s largest startup ecosystem”, says Tuula Antola, Director of the Economic Development.

FDI Intelligence, a service from the Financial Times, named Uusimaa as the winner when comparing the economic potential. Data was collected for 505 locations under six categories: Economic Potential, Human Capital and Lifestyle, Cost Effectiveness, Connectivity, Business Friendliness and FDI Strategy. The scores are weighted by importance to the FDI decision making process. In the ranking, the regions and cities are divided according to their size.

Attractive location for R&D and Innovation

Espoo Marketing attracts companies and investments to Espoo in collaboration with Helsinki Business Hub and Business Finland. “Espoo is now very attractive internationally. Many corporations want to create the solutions of the future with Espoo-based growth companies and research communities. Investors also want to be part of the growth created here,” says Jaana Tuomi, CEO of Espoo Marketing.

Espoo has a key role in the development and vitality of the Finnish economy. And the message from foreign companies is clear: Espoo and Greater Helsinki offers fascinating opportunities in research, product development, and innovation.

“In Finland, both public and private sectors are very future-oriented. We want to be an innovative pioneer and have a significant role in solving big global challenges. Greater Helsinki is a perfect location to develop new solutions”, Marja-Liisa Niinikoski, CEO of Helsinki Business Hub states.
