The Espoo Culture Committee awards annual grants and project and develpoment grants mainly to cultural actors from Espoo and for cultural activities taking place in Espoo. The Culture Committee also yearly awards a working grant for one professional artist who lives and works in Espoo as well as art grants for one month and three months.
Annual grants are intended to enable the operations of established art and cultural institutions as well as various art and cultural associations. Operating grants are also awarded to support local heritage work.
The aim of project and development grants, in turn, is to implement various festivals and other art events and projects as well as develop new operating models within art and cultural organisations or as collaboration. Project and development grant can also be applied for starting and developing artistic activities.
Art grants and a working grant can be applied by the professional artists in Espoo irrespective of art form.
The Culture Committee decides on grants at its meetings. The annual grants and the working grant for a professional artist (1 year) will be decided in December. The project and development grants as well as the art grants (1 month, 3 months) will be decided at the meetings between March and September.
The following aspects of the application will be assessed:
Diversity and equality
Accessibility and availability
Involvement and participation
Functional quality and implementation
The function of assistance activities is to promote and support cultural activities in a way that is regionally balanced and takes different groups of people into account, as well as to increase cooperation between different actors.
The allocation of cultural grants follows the city’s strategic policies.
The CultureEspoo 2030 programme approved by the Espoo City Council in 2015 >
Grants are always allocated on a discretionary basis. When grants are awarded, the applicant’s need for the grant, the quality, inclusiveness and self-funding of the applicant’s activities as well as the grant funds currently available to the Culture Committee are taken into account. The applicant should aim to have a share of self-funding that is in reasonable proportion to the grant applied for.
Assistance may be obtained for the same purpose from only one unit of the city. Grants are not awarded to the city’s own units or to activities connected to the joint municipal authority.
