Grants: General information
The Espoo Culture Committee awards annual grants and project and develpoment grants mainly to cultural actors from Espoo and for cultural activities taking place in Espoo. The Culture Committee also yearly awards a working grant for one professional artist who lives and works in Espoo as well as art grants for one month and three months.
Annual grants are intended to enable the operations of established art and cultural institutions as well as various art and cultural associations. Operating grants are also awarded to support local heritage work.
The aim of project and development grants, in turn, is to implement various festivals and other art events and projects as well as develop new operating models within art and cultural organisations or as collaboration. Project and development grant can also be applied for starting and developing artistic activities.
Art grants and a working grant can be applied by the professional artists in Espoo irrespective of art form.
The Culture Committee makes decisions on grants of over €3,000 at its meetings. Decisions on annual grants and working grants for professional artists (1 year) are made in December, and decisions on project and development grants as well as art grants (3 months) are made at meetings held between March and September.
Project and development grant applications or art grant applications (3 months) will primarily be decided at the next meeting of the Culture Committee when they arrive at the Registry Office no later than three weeks before the meeting date during the application period.
The Culture Committee has delegated decision-making power to the Cultural Director for grants of up to €3,000. This applies to project and development grants as well as 1-month art grants. Office-holder decisions on grants are made on a monthly basis.

Grants are always allocated on a discretionary basis. When grants are awarded, the applicant’s need for the grant, the quality, inclusiveness and self-funding of the applicant’s activities as well as the grant funds currently available to the Culture Committee are taken into account. The applicant should aim to have a share of self-funding that is in reasonable proportion to the grant applied for.
Assistance may be obtained for the same purpose from only one unit of the city. Grants are not awarded to the city’s own units or to activities connected to the joint municipal authority.
