Independence Day Gala Concert 2018
The traditional Independence Day Gala Concert of the City of Espoo was held in Espoo Metro Areena on 6 December 2018. A total of 6000 Espoo residents attended the event.
The orchestra was the Helsinki Police Band, conducted by Sami Ruusuvuori. Soloists include the charismatic Angelika Klas, the renowned baritone Jorma Hynninen and Arttu Wiskari, interpreter of Finnish feelings. Other performers included the choir Candomino, conducted by Esko Kallio, and the gymnastics group Olarin voimistelijat and Annami Hylkilä. The concert was hosted by Maria Sid.
At the concert, the city also handed out this year’s Espoo medals (established in 1972) as acknowledgements for eminent efforts for the city.
This was the nineteenth consecutive Independence Day gala concert. It has become a shared tradition for the whole city.
Live streaming brought the concert to homes and senior centres
The gala concert was streamed live from Espoo Metro Areena to homes, senior centres and other communities. A total of 6000 people watched the concert online. The purpose of the live streaming was to enable the inhabitants who were not present at the arena to enjoy the concert.
