The City of Espoo has sent a new pupils’ letter to all guardians of children born in 2013. The letter contains instructions and a unique code for registering the child for first grade. If you have not received the letter, please contact the Finnish Education unit as instructed below.
Registration for first grade for the school year 2020–2021 is now open in Espoo. However, the delivery of some new pupils’ letters to the pupils’ guardians has been delayed.
The City of Espoo sent out letters to all guardians of children born in 2013 in December, as usual. The letter is accompanied by a guidebook called “Tervetuloa ekaluokalle!” (“Welcome to First Grade”) and a unique code that the guardian should use to create a username in the Wilma online service. The registration for first grade takes place in Wilma.
The guardians of all new pupils should have received the letter in the beginning of January. If your child was born in 2013 but you have not yet received the letter, please call us or send us an email, and we will send you a new letter. The registration period for first grade will last until 20 January 2020.

An alternative way to register your child for first grade is to fill in a printed registration form and send it to the Finnish Education unit of the City of Espoo. The form is called “Application for 1st grade of comprehensive school 2020-2021” and it is available on the website Forms and applications. If you send the form by post, it must arrive at the Finnish Education unit no later than on 20 January 2020.
Many schools that offer weighted-curriculum education also hold information events for guardians in January. These events are listed in the electronic version of the “Tervetuloa ekaluokalle!” guidebook (in Finnish).
