Applying to bilingual education (Finnish-English)

Bilingual education (Finnish-English) is meant for Finnish-speaking pupils living in Espoo. It is possible to apply to the education from all Espoo areas.

Bilingual education is arranged in Jalavapuisto and Niittykumpu primary schools (grades 1-6), Haukilahti and Nöykkiö middle schools (grades 7-9), Kilonpuisto and Kuitinmäki joint comprehensive schools (grades 1-9) and in the beginning of school year 2021-2022 in Meritori school (grade 1). The prerequisite for establishing new education groups is that there are at least 18 applicants who meet the principles of pupil admission (selection/admission criteria). 

1st grade 

Application period has ended.  Applications submitted after the application period are rejected and the applicants will not be given a right to participate in the entrance examination.

Enrolling in the 1st grade of comprehensive school and applying for bilingual education takes place between 8 and 20 January 2021 through the electronic Wilma service by filling in the form 'Application for 1st grade of Comprehensive School'. If You are unable to use the Wilma service, You can fill in the paper form. The paper form must arrive no later than by 20 January 2021 to the following address: the Finnish Education Unit, Secretary of student affairs Sara Raitala, P.O. Box 31, FIN-02070 City of Espoo.

7th grade

Application period has ended.  Applications submitted after the application period are rejected and the applicants will not be given a right to participate in the entrance examination.

Enrolling in the 7th grade and applying for bilingual education takes place between January 8th and 18th 2021 through the electronic Wilma service by filling in the form 'Application for 7th Grade of Comprehensive school'. If You are unable to use the Wilma service, You can fill in the paper form. The paper form must be submitted to Your child's current school in Espoo by 18 January 2021.

Pupils who have attended bilingual education in the 6th grade
If Your child is attending bilingual education in joint comprehensive school (Kilonpuisto school, Kuitinmäki school) in the 6th grade, he/she will transfer to the 7th grade and continue in bilingual education without applying separately or participating in the entrance examination. If Your child is attending bilingual education in Jalavapuisto school or Niittykumpu school, You must fill in the form 'Application for 7th Grade of Comprehensive school'. In order to continue in bilingual education in the 7th grade, You must select all schools providing bilingual education in order of preference. You child does not have to participate in the entrance examination.

Entrance examination

  • 26 January 2021 at 9:00 am at Nöykkiö School (address: Nöykkiönlaaksontie 3). The applicants must arrive at the school by 8:45 am at the latest. Applicants will not receive personal invitations to the examination. 
    • If an applicant also applies for English-language education as a second choise, the examination exam must be taken at Espoo International School (address: Lillhemtintie 1).
  • Changes are possible due to COVID-19.

Other grades

If study places become available during the school year and they aren't filled by applicants moving to Espoo in the middle of the school year, new pupils can be admitted to the free study places based on the entrance examination.

Please fill in the application form 'Kaksikieliseen opetukseen (suomi-englanti) vuosiluokille 2-9 hakeminen' and submit it to the school offering bilingual education to which Your child primarily applies.

Moving pupils

If places become available during the school year, a pupil who has recently moved to Espoo can be admitted based on an entrance examination.

Please fill in the application form 'Kaksikieliseen opetukseen (suomi-englanti) vuosiluokille 2-9 hakeminen' and submit it to the school offering bilingual education to which Your child primarily applies.
