Additional basic education (the 10th grade)
Additional basic education, i.e. the 10th grade, is primarily intended for young, under 18-year-old residents of Espoo and Kauniainen who have completed their basic education and have not received a study place through the joint application system. The language of instruction in 10th grade is Finnish.
Additional education allows students to refine their plans for the future and improve their chances of being admitted to upper secondary education. Additional education lasts one school year. To qualify for 10th grade, the student must have their basic education certificate. An applicant who has previously participated in additional education cannot be admitted to additional education for a second time.
Additional education groups will be set up according to the number of applicants. The applicant cannot choose their additional education school because the number of groups to be set up depends on the total number of applicants, and all schools will not necessarily have a group for the purpose. After additional education, the student can apply to general upper secondary education or vocational education.
If the student has received a special support decision that is in force when they complete their basic education, the student will be assigned an additional education place in a separate group or a basic education group depending on their need for individual support.
Students can apply for additional education in February–March at www.studyinfo.fi. On the Studyinfo website, search for “Espoon kaupunki”, select Finnish as the language of instruction and go to “education type” -> “other study options” -> “Perusopetuksen lisäopetus, 1100 weekly lessons per year”.
Familiarisation period in a general upper secondary school or a vocational institution
Additional education includes a familiarisation period either in an upper secondary school or at Omnia, depending on the student’s wishes. The student can choose either option, regardless of their additional education school. During the school year, students will also complete a brief period of work experience.
