Midsummer Eve is on the way and many of us will be barbecuing, watching bonfires and swimming. It is important to keep also safety in mind while celebrating the Midsummer. Remember that the one who ignites fire must be prepared for first-extinguishing and is always responsible for possible damages.
Bonfires
-
Making a fire is allowed only by permission from the landowner.
-
When there is forest- or grassfire warning on, or there is warning of a strong wind, making fire is forbidden. Look warnings from the page of Finnish Meteorological Institute http://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/
-
Position the bonfire in an open area, away from any combustible objects (like overhanging wires or branches). Wet the surrounding area with waterhose.
-
Build the bonfire on incombustible base (rock, sands).
-
Never use gasoline or solvent to start the fire, the steam may ignite explosively.
-
Always have one person in charge of the fire at all times. Don’t leave the bonfire unattended!
-
Keep children and pets away from the bonfire.
-
Be aware of the wind blowing sparks.
-
Have a charged garden hose or other first extinguishing equipment available.
-
Have a mobile phone available and in case of emergency call 112.
-
Soak the ashes and combustion products with water (they can stay hot over 48 hours).
BBQ
-
Position the grill in an open area away from buildings, dry leaves or textiles.
-
Barbecue grills are designed for outdoor use only. Never barbecue in any enclosed area, like tent, house or garage, as carbon monoxide may accumulate.
-
Once lit, never leave a grill unattended.
-
Be aware of the wind blowing sparks.
-
Keep a fire extinguisher, water hose or fire blanket within handy reach.
-
Never leave children or pets unattended near a hot grill or lighter fluids or igniters.
-
Never try to extinguish grease fire with water, because water spreads the burning grease explosively. Smothering the flames with fire blanket is the correct procedure.
-
Let ashes cool for 48 hours. If you must dispose of the ashes before fully cooled, soak them completely in water before putting them in a non-combustible container. Every year there are many wildland fires because of unextinguished ashes has been thrown in nature.
Swimming
Always provide close and constant attention to children you are supervising in or near water. Use life jacket when on board. Know the water and weather conditions before getting in the water. If you drink alcohol stay away from waters. Don´t overestimate your swimming skills. Swim parallel along the shore. Always enter shallow and unknown water feet first.
