Sports and Recreation Department is responsible for the operation and upkeep of about five hundred sports and recreation facilities: ice-swimming holes, ice rinks, swimming pools, gyms, running and jogging tracks, bathing beaches, recreational areas and islands, sports parks and small-boat harbours and moorings in them. Every year, about three million visitors use the sports and recreation facilities.
Sports and recreational facilities are rented primarily to sports clubs based in Espoo. The Sports and Recreation Committee decides annually on the charges to be made for the use of sports and recreation facilities. Handicapped and pensioners’ organizations in Espoo are also classed with sports clubs. In most facilities, bookings for regular sessions are granted separately for the autumn-winter season and for the summer season, as well as for various events and tournaments. Applications for season bookings must be made with the Sports and Recreation Centre before the set closing date. Bookings for single sessions can be made with the Sports and Recreation Centre.
